Summary

Bimber, Flanagin and Stole tackle the question of re-considering theories of collective action in light of technological change, in particular the way in which Mancur Olson (1965) originally framed collective action. They suggest an expansion and amendment to theories of collective action which includes greater understanding of how technology enables informal organizations to function effectively to solve collective action problems. They also suggest that collective action is best understood as a special case of boundary-crossing phenomenon.

Theoretical and Practical Relevance

This article seems most useful in the way it draws attention to informal organizations and their solutions to collective action problems using technology.
