Summary
Circa 1995 open source version repository access required login, so was limited to core developers. Others could download source code without version information, making it hard to track and contribute to development.
Authors describe solving this problem by allowing anonymous access to a version repository by running a separate instance of the version repository software (CVS) that is read-only, on a different machine from the developer instance, from which it is updated, and may be accessed by anyone.
Thus authors:
- have extended "Open Source" to the next level Open Source => Open Source Repository
Also briefly describe complementary developments such as CVSweb, which allows browsing the contents of a version repository without downloading the entire repository.
