My name is Colin Payton and I am a PhD student in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. True to the protean nature of the classical rhetoricians I study, my educational background is an amalgam of history, philosophy, poetry, evolutionary biology, composition studies, creative writing, cognitive science, and literature theory. As a teacher, I embrace the performative nature of public speaking and bring music performance and theater studies into the public speaking classroom. Heavily influenced by Cicero, Longinus, Voltaire, and Vico, I am studying how academics – especially rhetoricians and scientists – can re-engage and re-inspire the public sphere: too many excellent ideas are too poorly communicated.
