Scholarly wikis are not one thing but many
There are lots of lists of scholarly wikis (e.g. Wikis for biology) and visions of how wikis can and are being used. For instance, see User:Daniel Mietchen, who says that wikis have been used for all aspects of science, except for making funding decisions (technically no problem either): Integrating wikis with scientific workflows
Different kinds of scholarly wikis
Some wikis may aim to support all aspects of the (scientific) research process. Others focus on particular aspects (data management or analysis, supporting collaborative writing, communicating research). So far AcaWiki's aim is to make research more accessible to the public and to scholars (especially new researchers and interdisciplinary reserachers). How can we measure our success in meeting that? Are we "amplifying research"?
