Summary

Transparency, openness, and reproducibility are not sufficiently incentivized in academia, resulting in eg null results being unpublished and lost. Collective action problem, so nudging in direction of openness required of all stakeholders.

Authors propose Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines addressing journal publication policy and procedures, consisting of 8 standards.

"two standards reward researchers for the time and effort they have spent engaging in open practices"

  • citation standards
  • replication

"four standards describe what openness means across the scientific process so that research can be reproduced and evaluated."

  • data transparency
  • analytic methods (code) transparency
  • research materials transparency
  • design and analysis transparency

"two standards address the values resulting from preregistration"

  • of studies
  • of analysis plans

Three levels for each standard: 1: expressive, 2: no cost, 3: additional cost may be necessary to meet standard.
