Summary

Notes: Noninstitutionalized medicare recipients were 30% more likely to die within 2 years of reporting feeling sad. The association is stronger for men. The effect of sadness is independent of cardiovascular disease. Divorce is associated w/death in men but not women, which needs further exploration. The authors discuss possible biological and function feedback mechanisms. Evidence shows that treatment of clinical depression does not reduce mortality.
