Neill provides several personal opinions from his editor experience that how to articulate a good scientific paper. These opinions cover the pre-, -ing, and post- conditions that we should notice as an author.

Before you write, you shall consider three things: be realistic and choose a sufficient journal to publish tour work, settle down the authorship and write a good cover letter no more than 5 paragraphs which help the editor to understand how important and suitable of your work.

Start your paper with an informative but without using excess punctuation and boring title. Abstract is also an element to attract your readers. Use your abstract as a hook, it attract readers’ attention to read your work deeply. In the abstract, use present tense to refer to common knowledge in your field, and use past tense to address current research results, and try to avoid passive voice.

In a scientific article, Neill recommends to put result first, the result needs to be neat and with indicate statistical differences and few interpretations. You shall illustrate your logical thinking processes in the discussion section. In the discussion part, you shall summary how the experiments support your hypothesis and present the implications for broader application. In the end of discussion, you shall slightly address about untouched questions from your research, in other words future potential direction.

Finally wrap up your work with introduction, methods and figures. In the intro section, you shall cite enough relevant references to connect your question and what have already been done, and also to try to avoid reproducing some other studies simply.

Remember, you have the right to exclude and recommend the reviewer of your work, but do remember as well that do not to exclude too many people and include reviewers who are your friends, recent (less than 3 years) coauthors, and collaborators.
